Descreve-se um processo para produção de nitrilas que compreende submeter um alcano e amônia, no estado gasoso, à oxidação catalítica na presença de um óxido da fórmula: Mo^ a^ V~ b~ Te~ c~ Nb~ d~ X~ x~ O~ n~ na qual X é pelo menos um elemento selecionado do grupo consistindo de Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Al, Ga, Tl, In, Ti, Zr, Hf, Ta, Cr, Mn, W, Fe, Ru, Co, Rh, Ni, Pd, Pt, Zn, Sn, Pb, As, Sb, Bi, La e Ce, quando a = 1, b = 0,01 a 1,0, c = 0,01 a 1,0, d = 0 a 1,0, e x = 0,0005 a 1,0, e n é um número tal que a valência total dos elementos de metal é satisfeita.
