A presente invenção se refere a um processo para a preparação do ácido tereftálico com alto grau de pureza, através da oxidação catalitica em fase liquida do p-xileno, utilizando uma reação parcialmente homogênea na presença de um catalisador muito específico, O processo produz um ácido tereftálico de alta pureza sem a etapa secundária de purificação atualmente realizada.
