Methodology
How to read these figures
Each measure answers a different question, and none of them, on its own, defines a firm.
Trademarks in historical portfolio
Applications and registrations linked to the firm in acts published by the INPI over the course of its practice. It measures accumulated experience and does not necessarily reflect today’s active portfolio: a client who left fifteen years ago still counts here.
Last 12 months
Applications filed in the most recent window. This is the measure of a live practice: firms with a large historical portfolio and little current activity show up here.
Change vs. previous 12 months
Filings in the last 12 months compared with the 12 months immediately before. It is the change between two windows, not a rate that repeats every year, nor a long-term trend.
Approval, last 5 years
Grants as a share of all cases decided in the five-year window. A firm with fewer than 50 decisions in the period receives no rate, because the figure would not be stable. It is the same measure shown on each firm’s profile.
States served
Brazilian states where the firm has clients with filed trademarks. It indicates reach, not team size or number of offices.
TrademarkIQ Score
A score from 0 to 100 on each firm’s profile, built from six dimensions measured over the same five-year window. It does not measure reputation, fees or client service.
The comparison population, the time windows and what each figure does not measure are set out in how we calculate these figures. This directory shows the historical portfolio; to see who filed the most trademarks each year, and who rose or fell in position, the annual view is in the annual firm ranking.
Questions about the directory
What firms usually ask when they find themselves here
The questions of trust, which are not the ones the methodology answers.
Where do these figures come from?
From the acts the INPI publishes in the Industrial Property Gazette (RPI) and from the public trademark databases, supplemented by the public company registry for client location and sector. No firm fills in, reviews or approves what appears here.
Can a firm pay to move up the directory?
No. No position is sold, sponsored or negotiated, and there is no plan that changes the order of the list. The calculation is published in how we calculate these figures and is the same for everyone.
Are the clients shown on a firm’s profile current clients?
Not necessarily. They are the owners with the most trademarks filed through that firm across its entire practice recorded at the INPI, and a relationship that ended ten years ago remains visible in the record. It is a sample of what public acts record, not the active commercial portfolio or the full client list. Names of individual owners are withheld, and we do not publish email addresses, phone numbers or revenue.
How often do these figures change?
The measures are recalculated with each edition of the Industrial Property Gazette that enters the system. The reference point is the latest edition processed, not the day you are reading.
Why do the figures differ from the firm’s internal records?
Because the directory reconstructs a firm’s activity from what was published, not from what the firm records internally. The same firm often appears at the INPI under several spellings over the years, and we bring them together under a single profile. Changes of representative mid-case, corporate reorganisations and ended relationships also produce a reading that differs from the internal one.
Does TrademarkIQ recommend the firms it lists?
No. Presence, position and Score are not a referral, recommendation, partnership or legal assessment. The indicators describe what can be measured in public acts, and there is much they cannot capture: fees, service, response times, strategy and the experience of former clients.
Can a firm correct information or leave the directory?
Yes. Corrections can be sent through the contact page and are checked against the public source before any change is made. A firm that requests removal no longer appears, by name or by address.
Before choosing a firm
See whether your trademark has a path at the INPI
Choosing a firm comes after the question that decides the application: does your trademark conflict with something already registered? TrademarkIQ search answers in seconds, across the full INPI database.
Figures derived from acts published by the INPI in the Industrial Property Gazette (RPI) and from the public trademark databases. No data is self-reported by the firms and no position in this directory is bought. A firm’s presence here is not a referral, recommendation or partnership, and this content does not constitute legal advice.
