A presente invenção refere-se a um catalisador oxídico que contém césio e tungstênio para a síntese de alquil mercaptanos partindo de alcanóis e sulfeto de hidrogênio e a um processo para a produção deste catalisador, em que a razão molar de césio para tungstênio é < 2:1.
