É descrito um processo para a preparação de citalopram e dos seus sais farmaceuticamente aceitáveis, reagindo 5-cianoftalida com um haleto de 4-fluorofenil-magnésio, reduzindo a 3-hidroximetil-4-(4-fluorobenzoil)benzonitrila com um agente que reduza cetonas a álcoois, submetendo a 3-hidroximetil-4-[(4-fluorofenil)hidroximetil]benzonitrila assim obtida a uma reação de ciclização para produzir 1-(4-fluorofenil)-1,3-dihidro-5-isobenzofurancarbonitrila sem 1, 1-bis-(4-fluorofeni])-1,3-dihidro-5-isobenzofurancarbonitrila e tratar a 1,1-bis-(4-fluorofenil)-1,3-dihidro-5-isobenzofurancarbonitrila com um haleto de 3-(dimetilamino)propila na presença de uma base.
