Proporciona-se uma composição antioxidante, que compreende um composto cíclico tendo a fórmula (I) ou um derivado dele, em que R^ 1^ e R^ 2^ são selecionados, independentemente, de -OH, =O, em que R^ 3^ é um substituinte que compreende um grupo -OH; e em que R^ 4^ e R^ 5^ são diferentes de H; com a condição de que o composto é diferente de ácido ascórbico.
