As composições incluem um componente polimérico que libera calor durante uma faixa de temperaturas ambientes caindo a partir de aproximadamente O C. Apresentando uma faixa ampla de temperaturas de transição para congelamento, as composições, quando aplicadas a plantas, reduzem de modo efetivo a temperatura limite à qual ocorre um dano substancial por geada e/ou congelamento a plantas.
