IBM

IBM arrived in Brazil in 1917, when tabulating machines began organizing censuses and offices. In 1949, the application to register the IBM trademark with INPI formalized an acronym already present in government offices and companies. Decades before personal computers, the name IBM appeared on punched cards and calculating machines that sped up the bureaucratic work of cities.

In the 1990s, IBM had its busiest year at INPI, as computing reached banks, stores, and homes. The Infoprint line, from 1997, marked an era in high volume printers. Later, the company migrated to the cloud: SoftLayer and IBM Cloud Managed Services, both from 2014, became discreet platforms for digital services. In 2011, IBM filed the Watson trademark with INPI; Watson began helping companies analyze data and serve customers.

Today, IBM’s brands appear more in infrastructure than on shelves. Planeta Mais Inteligente, from 2013, summed up this proposal of using technology to solve urban and environmental problems. At the supermarket, the bank, or on your cell phone, what works behind the scenes uses technology that IBM helped build, without showing the seal of the 1949 acronym.
