Gases podem ser mantidos na forma compacta, por exemplo, em densidades de energia comparáveis àquela da gasolina no caso de gases combustíveis tais como hidrogênio, metano ou gás natural, pela armazenagem em um estado de movimento relativamente cessado entre as lâminas esfoliadas de estruturas cristalinas laminares esfoliadas, por exemplo estruturas cristalinas hexagonais esfoliadas tais como grafita ou nitreto de boro.
