Um processo para preparar polímeros de açúcares funcionais compreendendo transferir um monossacarídeo ou oligossacarídeo a um aceitador, remover subprodutos, separar polímeros os quais não têm alcançado o comprimento de cadeia desejado e reciclar estes polímeros subdesenvolvidos, e um mecanismo para produzir o mesmo.
