A invenção provê um processo para produzir um fluoroálcool da seguinte fórmula (1): H(CFR¹CF~ 2~)~ n~CH~ 2~OH (1) (em que R¹ representa F ou CF~ 3~, quando n = 1; R¹ representa F, quando n = 2), compreendendo reagir metanol com tetrafluoroetileno ou hexafluoropropileno na presença de uma fonte de radical livre, em que a mistura de reação é submetida à destilação ou na presença de uma base ou após o contato da referida mistura de reação com uma base.
