Um acoplamento multi-direcional (10) consiste de uma sapata tubular (14) entre um membro tubular (12) e um canalete (16), havendo superfícies de fricção tubulares encaixáveis (20,36) na sapata (14) e no canalete (16), e superfícies de mancal confrontantes (18, 22) no membro tubular (12) e no canalete (14) definindo entre eles um canal (28) com sulcos (28a) recebendo membros rolete (30), havendo um atuador (por ex., um dente (30)) no membro tubular (12) encaixando um rebaixo (40) na sapata (14), ou um batoque ou um pino(s) ou um came encaixável com a sapata (14), para prover dois, três ou quatro diferentes modos de operação (p. ex., travado, de roda livre em ambas as direções, roda livre em uma direção e/ou na outra).
