Benzeno e outros aromáticos são separados de uma corrente de hidrocarbonetos mistos que contêm tanto aromáticos como não aromáticos, por destilação extrativa com um sistema solvente que contém sulfóxido de dimetila e, opcionalmente, um co-solvente, de preferência água, seguindo-se fracionamento por destilação dos aromáticos do sistema solvente para o estágio de destilação extrativa.
