O elemento promotor tem utilidade específica em dirigir a transcrição de proteínas estruturais heterólogas que conferem imunidade ou resistência à doença. A palavra "doença" abrange qualquer condição adversa ocasionada a uma planta por um organismo outro do que ele próprio, tais como fungos, bactérias e insetos. São revelados os plamídeos incorporando o promotor.
