A presente invenção apresenta composições biocompatíveis reticuladas compreendendo um componente ionicamente reticulado e um componente covalentemente reticulado para encapsulação de produtos biológicos. De acordo com a presente invenção, também são apresentadas misturas biocompatíveis reticuláveis compreendendo um componente ionicamente reticulável e um componente covalentemente reticulável. São fornecidos métodos para a encapsulação de produtos biológicos com as composições biocompatíveis reticuladas e reticuláveis. Também são apresentadas macrocápsulas recuperáveis para encapsulação das microcápsulas ou produtos biológicos.
