Olefinas, tais como propileno e isobutileno são convertidas em nitrilas insaturadas correspondentes, acrilonitrila, e metacrilonitrila, respectivamente, por reação de uma mistura de olefina, amônia e gás contendo oxigênio molecular, em presença de um catalisador contendo os óxidos de molibdênio, bismuto, ferro, cobalto, níquel, e cromo, e tanto fósforo quanto antimônio, ou misturas dos mesmos, e um metal alcalino ou mistura do mesmo e opcionalmente um elemento selecionado do grupo de um metal de terras raras, um metal de terras raras, nióbio, tálio, arsênico, magnésio, zinco, cádmio, vanádio, boro, cálcio, estanho, germânio, manganês, tungstênio, telúrio ou misturas dos mesmos.
