A invenção proporciona composições para melhorar a função renal compreendendo uma quantidade melhoradora da função renal de um ou mais antioxidantes e uma quantidade reduzida de proteína e/ou fósforo em comparação com a quantidade máxima de proteína e fósforo tipicamente recomendada para um animal saudável da mesma espécie ou raça e métodos para melhorar a função renal compreendendo administrar referidas composições a um animal suscetível a, ou sofrendo de doença renal ou função renal prejudicada. Em uma concretização preferida, a composição é uma composição alimentícia útil para melhorar a função renal.
