A presente invenção refere-se a certos complexos de ferro que compreendem ferro ferroso ou férrico e ligantes mono, bi, tri ou hexadentado contendo um anel aromático ou heterocíclico de cinco ou seis membros para o uso no tratamento e/ou prevenção de disfunções nutricionais e composições contendo tais complexos de ferro. O complexo de ferro aumenta a biodisponibilidade do ferro e são particularmente úteis no tratamento e/ou prevenção de disfunções nutricionais, disfunções da deficiência de ferro e anemia.
