Um gerenciador de recurso do ambiente computacional heterogêneo obtém a informação que descreve que nós do ambiente computacional heterogêneo são capazes de suportar sistemas operacionais e plataformas adicionais sobre e acima de seus sistemas operacionais e plataformas nativos. Esta informação é usada então pelo gerenciador de recurso ao alocar recursos para satisfazer um trabalho particular.
