A invenção refere-se a um método de separação e isolamento de um derivado acilado de 4-[(S)-4-dimeti-ilamino-1-(4-fluorofeinil)-1-hidroxibutil]-3-hidroximetilbenzonitrila por reação de uma mistura de 4-[(S)-4-dimeti-ilamino-1-(4-fluorofenil)-1-hidróxi-butil]-3-hidroximetil-benzonitrila e um derivado acilado da mesma com um composto que forma um derivado de 4-[(S)-4-dimetilamino-1-(4-fluorofenil)-1-hidróxi-butil]-3-hidroximetibenzonitrila contendo um grupo de ácido carboxílico. O derivado acilado contendo um grupo de ácido carboxílico precipita uma vez que ele é formado e pode facilmente ser separado da mistura de reação.
