A presente invenção descreve processos eletroquímicos para a produção de hidrogênio via eletrólise da água, onde são utilizados como eletrólitos líquidos iônicos ou sais fundidos em temperatura ambiente; os líquidos iônicos preferenciais são do tipo que compreendem sais de amônio, sais de fosfônio, sais de imidazólio e correlatos passíveis de utilização em ampla faixa de condições operacionais; o produto final é de alta pureza e de baixo custo de produção.
