As composições exemplares compreendem pelo menos um ácido aldopentônico, tal como o ácido xilônico; e compreende ainda uma lignina, um ácido ligno-sulfônico ou seu sal, um ácido de açúcar adicional tal como um ácido aldo-hexônico ou sal, uma mistura convencional (tal como de um superplastificante de poliacrilato, um inibidor de corrosão, um retardador de pega, um acelerador de pega etc.) ou uma mistura deles. Os processos exemplares para a obtenção de ácidos de açúcar convertidos microbiológica ou enzimaticamente são também descritos aqui.
