Provê-se um método para a preparação de 5-cianoftalida, no qual 5-carboxiftalida é reagido com um agente de desidratação, tal como tionilcloreto e sulfonamida, preferivelmente sulfonamida. Cianoftalida é preparado em rendimentos altos através de um procedimento conveniente. 5-cianoftalida é um intermediário utilizado na preparação do medicamento antidepressivo citalopram.
