O aparelho compreende: uma folha magnetizável macia, tendo uma superfície externa disposta para facear o artigo em uso, e uma superfície interna oposta; e um imã permanente, conformado de modo que seu campo magnético contenha pertubações dando origem a marcas distintivas. O imã permanente é disposto adjacente à superfície interna da folha magnetizável macia. A folha magnetizável macia aumenta as pertubações do campo magnético do imã permanente, de modo que, quando a camada a ser impressa está localizada adjacente à superfície externa da folha magnetizável macia, as partículas magnéticas ou magnetizáveis são orientadas pelo campo magnético para exibir as marcas distintivas.
