Mark description

The mark consists of a three-dimensional configuration comprising an oval medallion with an inner border containing rivets, a shaded border beyond the inner border, and an outermost rim. Within the shaded border are the words "HEROINE OF INFANTRY", the word "HEROINE" being located at the top of the medallion and "OF INFANTRY" located at the bottom of the medallion. Two crossed rifles are on either side of the medallion within the shaded border next to the wording "NIA". Inside the innermost border the medal has a raised center which is divided in three sections by riveted braces resembling a Y shape. On the right arm of the Y-shaped brace are the Latin words "PRO PATRIA". On the left arm of the Y-shaped brace are the words "PRO FAMILIA". On the lower arm of the Y-shaped brace which vertically bisects the medallion are the words "PRO DEO". The panel at the top of the Y-shaped brace depicts a legionnaire receiving a sword from his wife prior to marching off to war. They are standing over a foundation with the Latin word "PIETAS". The panel to the lower left of the Y-shaped brace is an American frontier soldier bidding farewell to his family. The panel to the lower right of the Y-shaped brace is a contemporary setting of a wife saying goodbye to her husband. The broken lines depict the oval shape of the medallion, which is not part of the mark.
