The mark consists of the year and the stylized wording "THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE CITY UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK 1926 JUSTICE WISDOM KNOWLEDGE ERVDITIO POPVLI LIBERI SPES GENTIVM" and design. The design consists of two concentric circles and within the space between the two circles and centered at the base is the year "1926" and a triangle appears before and after the year. To the left of the year is the wording "THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE CITY UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK" that encircles the space. Within the inner circle is the design of two classically-robed female figures each looking in the opposite direction. Centered between the two figures is an altar upon which the figure on the left rests her left arm. Centered below the altar, each term in stacked formation, is the Latin motto "ERVDITIO POPVLI LIBERI SPES GENTIVM". A triangle appears before and after the term "SPES". Above the altar are 13 rays and superimposed on the rays' center is the term "WISDOM". The female figure on the left outstretches her right arm and above her right arm is the image of a mountain range and above the mountain range is the term "JUSTICE". The female figure on the right appears to lean against the altar while holding an open book with both hands and above her left arm is the image of a mountain range and above the mountain range is the term "KNOWLEDGE".
