A invenção inclui um gene codificado E.coli csrA, a proteína codificada pelo mesmo e métodos de seu uso. Este gene é mostrado ser um regulador negativo do gene de síntese de glicogênio glgC e glgB assim como inibir ou ativar um grande número de outros genes envolvidos em síntese de glicogênio, gluconeogênese e glicólise. Este gene pode ser usado para alterar o metabolismo ou propriedades funcionais de uma célula.
