A presente invenção refere-se a uma composição farmaceutica que compreende, como princípios ativos metformina, de modo opcional na forma de um de seus sais farmaceuticamente aceitáveis e um ácido 4-oxobutanóico, em combinação com um ou mais excipientes farmaceuticamente aceitáveis. Essas composições são adequadas de forma específica para o tratamento do diabetes não dependente de insulina.
