O aparelho inclui um invólucro tubular (101, 201, 301, 401, 501) configurado para se estender abaixo do solo e um sensor de gás (108, 208, 308, 408, 508). O invólucro tubular inclui uma manga protetora externa (114, 214, 314, 414, 514) com perfurações (116, 216, 316, 416, 516), uma estrutura de suporte (118, 218, 318, 518) dentro da manga protetora externa que define uma câmara interna e uma membrana permeável a gás (102, 202, 302, 402, 502) transportada pela estrutura de suporte e configurada para impedir a entrada de solo ou líquido na câmara interna. O sensor de gás está em comunicação com a câmara interna para medir a concentração do gás na câmara interna.
