Um processo (10) para extrair manganês de minério contendo manganês inclui torrefação (12.2) de uma mistura de alimentação de minério contendo manganês particulado (26), compreendendo Mn e Fe, e sulfato de amônio (24) a uma primeira temperatura T1 para prover uma mistura sulfonada compreendendo MnSO4(s) e FeSO4(s). A mistura sulfonada é torrada (12.3) a uma segunda temperatura T2, que é maior do que a primeira temperatura T1, para formar uma mistura lixiviável (30) compreendendo MnSO4(s) e Fe2O3(s). O MnSO4(s) é lixiviado (16) em preferência ao Fe2O3(s) da mistura lixiviável (30) para prover um lixiviado (34, 38) rico em MnSO4 dissolvido.
