A presente invenção refere-se a um elemento deslizante, em particular um anel de pistão, e um método para produzir o mesmo, em que o elemento deslizante compreende um material de base de aço inoxidável martensítico ou austenítico que tem um teor de cromo de pelo menos 6,0% em massa e uma camada nitretada que tem uma dureza de superfície de até 950 HV1.
