São divulgadas composições, tais como composições de cuidados pessoais e métodos para inibir seletivamente o crescimento de bactérias prejudiciais e promover o crescimento de bactérias benéficas. A composição pode incluir uma base e um ou mais álcoois graxos. Um ou mais álcoois graxos podem estar presentes em uma quantidade eficaz para inibir seletivamente o crescimento de pelo menos uma bactéria Gram-positiva prejudicial e promover o crescimento de pelo menos uma bactéria Gram-positiva benéfica na pele. As bactérias Gram-positivas prejudiciais podem incluir Corynebacterium e as bactérias Gram-positivas benéficas podem incluir Staphylococcus.
