A presente invenção refere-se a um aço para um prendedor de ferramentas. O aço compreende os seguintes componentes principais (em% em peso): C 0,07-0,13; Si 0,10-0,45; Mn 1,5-3,1; Cr 2,4-3,6; Ni 0,5-2,0; Mo 0,1-0,7; Al 0,001-0,06 S < 0,003. O aço tem uma microestrutura bainítica compreendendo até 20% em volume austenita retida e até 20% em volume de martensita.
