As partículas podem ser compostas de um óxido metálico tal como óxido de titânio ou óxido de zinco, e podem ser revestidas com um revestimento externo. A composição pode também conter um ou mais componentes orgânicos que são ligados ou não ligados às partículas. A composição pode ser usada para evitar que mosquitos extraem sangue de um hospedeiro e/ou de infectar um hospedeiro com uma doença ou infecção por mosquitos, ou para proteger um hospedeiro de extração de sangue e/ou infecção por um mosquito.
