Abstract
A presente invenção refere-se a genes beta-cetoacil-ACP sintase do tipo KASI/KASIV e a proteínas codificadas por estes genes. Os genes podem ser incluídos em construtos de ácidos nucleicos, vetores ou células hospedeiras. A expressão dos produtos genéticos pode alterar o perfil dos ácidos graxos das células hospedeiras. Os genes KAS podem ser combinados com um gene tioesterase FATA ou FATB para criar uma célula que produz uma quantidade aumentada de ácidos graxos C8-C16. Células hospedeiras adequadas incluem células plastídicas de plantas ou microalgas. São divulgadas células hospedeiras oleaginosas de microalgas com os novos genes.
