O aparelho pode incluir aplicadores para o luminol, o oxidante e uma base. O aparelho pode incluir um microprocessador e uma conexão de rede e pode executar análises estatísticas, armazenar dados e alertar o paciente ou um provedor de cuidados com a saúde se o sangue for detectado. O fotodetector pode ser configurado para detectar a luz emitida no vaso sanitário por um fluoróforo presente na água e excitado pela luz temporária do luminol e do oxidante.
