AbstractIn this study, commercially available softwood lignin was esterified with tall oil fatty acid (TOFA) and tested as barrier material in fiber-based packaging material. The modified lignin samples were applied with a bar coater forming an even coating on the paperboard substrate. A significant decrease in WVTR and OTR value was observed for paperboard coated with the modified lignin as well as pure TOFA used as a reference. In contrast to the TOFA coating, the modified lignin coatings exhibited a high and stable contact angle. The coating material did not affect the tensile strength of the paperboard. According to the results, the demonstration of the conversion of lignin into a value added product has been shown. Furthermore, the novel coating material shows promising properties for the development as sustainable barrier material in fiber-based packaging material to replace oil-placed barriers.TRADUÇÃO DO RESUMORESUMOPedido de Patente: "LIGNINA FUNCIONALIZADA E MÉTODO DE PRODUZIR A MESMA". Neste estudo, lignina de madeira conífera, comercialmente disponível, foi esterificada com ácido graxo de óleo de pinho (TOFA), e testada como material de barreira em material de embalagem baseado em fibra. As amostras de lignina modificada foram aplicadas com um revestimento de barra formando um revestimento nivelado sobre o substrato de cartão. Uma diminuição significativa em valor de WVTR e OTR foi observada para cartão revestido com a lignina modificada, como também TOFA pura ser usada como uma referência. Ao contrário do revestimento de TOFA, os revestimentos de lignina modificada exibem um ângulo de contato elevado e estável. O material de revestimento não afeta a resistência tênsil do cartão. De acordo com os resultados, a demonstração da conversão de lignina em um produto que adicionou valor foi mostrada. Além do mais, o novo material de revestimento mostra propriedades promissoras para o desenvolvimento como material de barreira sustentável, em material de embalagem, baseado em fibra para substituir barreiras em que óleo foi colocado.
