Abstract
1 / 1 ABSTRACT Smart Card Module A smart card module 10 comprises an extended circuit substrate 12; a card-reader contact element 18 on one side of the extended circuit substrate 12 for connection to a smart card reader; an integrated circuit connection element 20 on another side of the extended circuit substrate 12 in electrical communication with the card-reader contact element 18 and to which an integrated circuit 22 is mountable; and an antenna 24 on the extended circuit substrate 12 and which is connected to the integrated circuit connection element 20 for receiving radio frequency signals from the smart card reader to energise the integrated circuit 22. A furthest perimeter edge of the said antenna 24 is spaced from a relative proximal edge of the card-reader contact element 18 by at least half a distance between the said proximal edge and a centre C1 of the card-reader contact element. This enables a larger antenna coil to be accommodated on the substrate with less overlap of the card-reader contact element, whilst also enabling a separate module to be formed for integration with a body of the smart card.
